In 2011, Rapinoe took part in games with Sydney Football Club FC of the Australian W-League before returning to the United States. The Seattle Washington Sounders Women, now Sound FC, were her first team. She was in France during the 2013 football season. Then she joined in the Seattle Reign FC now OL Reign of the National Women's Soccer League NWSL which had formed after the WPS broke up. She was a participant at the second Olympics in Rio de Janeiro Brazil in the year 2016. In 2016, the U.S. was knocked out of the quarterfinals during Rio. Her participation at this year's FIFA Women's World Cup began in 2011. Her contributions was instrumental in helping with the U.S. Women's World Cup win successive championships between 2015 and 2019. In 2018, she took on the position of cocaptain to the squad. Rapinoe was the one who scored two goals for the United States in the 4-3 victory against Australia in the Olympic bronze medal match at Tokyo in 2020 because of the COVID-19 epidemic that Japan was forced to postpone to 2021 due to the effects from this epidemic, also took home the gold medal in Tokyo in 2016.
